Gumbo is a 2-year-old male Labrador Retriever seeking a responsible and committed forever home. He is vaccinated, dewormed, and in good health. Gumbo has not yet been neutered. Like most young Labradors, he is energetic, affectionate, and enjoys engaging with people. He is highly food motivated, which makes him eager to learn and responsive to positive reinforcement training.

Gumbo has a mild tendency to resource guard toys. Once he has a toy, he may be reluctant to give it up, so attempts to take it or snatch it away should be avoided. This behaviour is manageable and can be improved through consistent, reward-based training. Teaching and reinforcing a reliable “drop it” cue should be a priority for his new family, and his strong food motivation will make this training relatively straightforward. Setting up boundaries and teaching him impulse control would skid be key in setting him up for success.

Gumbo requires a home that:

• • is experienced with working breeds, especially Labrador Retrievers and understands the needs of a young male Labrador Retriever
  • is prepared and capable of providing regular physical exercise, mental enrichment
  • will commit to training so that his mild resource guarding can be corrected through redirection and positive reinforcement and can provide a structured lifestyle
  • has access to good groomers, private veterinary care and trainers or behaviourists
  • can provide a non-vegetarian diet
  • can establish clear routines, set boundaries and continue working on his behaviour and help him into becoming a well-adjusted adult
  • is willing to neuter him
